Our Founder
Dawn L. Adams

Her father was arrested. It was many years before he returned home. Her family endured circumstances no child should ever have to experience, and she was forced to become a second parent to her sibling. She struggled in school and had no clear plan for a brighter future.
Her story reflects the harsh reality faced by countless young girls. Dawn meets girls like her every day—girls without a relatable community, meaningful support, or a plan for their future.
With limited support, girls impacted by parental incarceration are often labeled “throwaways.” Tragically, 36% may follow in their parents’ footsteps, committing their first offense as early as age 12. Zion Girls Academy is committed to changing that statistic.
Dawn founded Zion Girls Academy out of necessity and a recognition of neglect. Because she understands their struggles, she realized that no other program in the Sacramento region was dedicated solely to serving this overlooked population and addressing the unique needs of daughters affected by parental incarceration.
Zion Girls Academy has partnered with Sacramento State’s Project Rebound Re-Entry Program and the nationally recognized Prison Fellowship Ministries/Angel Tree to ensure that each young woman in its cohorts benefits from a faith-based, innovative mentoring program.
At Zion Girls Academy, the work is centered on three commitments:
-
Prepare her for higher education.
-
Help her overcome social stigmas.
-
Engage her in civic action.
Together, Zion Girls Academy is committed to breaking the cycle—one daughter at a time.
